Welcoming a new kitten into your home is an exciting and joyful time – but it also comes with responsibility. Just like human babies, kittens need proper health care from the very beginning to ensure they grow into happy, healthy adult cats.
At Beehive Vets in Rothwell, we’re here to support you and your new feline friend every step of the way—starting with their very first kitten health check.
Why Are Kitten Health Checks Important?
Kittens are curious, playful, and full of energy—but they’re also more vulnerable to illnesses and parasites, especially in the first few months of life. A health check allows our veterinary team to spot any early signs of problems and create a plan for vaccinations, nutrition, parasite protection, and general wellbeing, so if you are unsure of how to check cat health, kitten health checks are paramount.
Early vet visits also help your kitten get used to being handled and examined, which makes future trips to the vet far less stressful—for both of you!
What Happens During a Kitten Health Check?
When you bring your kitten in for their first visit to Beehive Vets, here’s what you can expect from their cat health check:
Full Physical Examination
We’ll carefully check your kitten from nose to tail—listening to their heart and lungs, checking their eyes, ears, teeth, skin, coat, and weight—to make sure they’re developing normally.
Vaccination Plan
We’ll start their vaccination course, which usually begins around 8–9 weeks of age. This protects them from serious diseases like cat flu, feline enteritis, and leukaemia (FeLV).
Worming and Flea Treatment
Parasites like worms and fleas are very common in kittens, especially those from rescue centres or outdoor environments. We’ll recommend safe, effective treatments and set up a regular schedule to keep them protected.
Microchipping
We’ll talk to you about microchipping, which is a simple and permanent way to help reunite you with your kitten if they ever go missing. It’s a legal requirement for cats in the UK from 10 June 2024.
Feeding and Behaviour Advice
Not sure what to feed your kitten? We can help! We’ll guide you through proper kitten nutrition, litter training, playtime tips, and how to encourage good behaviour from an early age.
How Often Should My Kitten See the Vet?
Your kitten will need a few visits during their first few months to complete their vaccinations and monitor their growth. After that, we recommend annual health checks (along with their booster jabs) to keep them in tip-top shape.
