Beehive Vets now offer Acupuncture Treatment for Pets

Acupuncture has been around for more than 4,000 years, but common use in the Western world only started to happen in the last few decades. Recent research into acupuncture has found various neuro-mechanisms as the basis of how acupuncture is thought to work. Some of these include stimulation of the production of the body’s naturally occurring opioids and inhibition of excitatory neurones. While the Western explanations are not yet exhaustive, the effectiveness of acupuncture itself is keeping it a highly researched field.

What conditions can be treated with acupuncture for pets?

One of the main conditions that acupuncture can benefit is Osteoarthritis.  In the practice, we already offer great tools to treat Osteoarthritis, such as monoclonal antibody therapy (Librela and Solensia) and drugs, such as non-steroid anti-inflammatories. We can even recommend the best of the best joint supplements to maximise cartilage retention. We see all of these bringing a new lease of life to so many older patients.

However, the fact remains that Osteoarthritis is a progressive disease and will always worsen with time. At Beehive Vets, we are proud to be able to offer acupuncture as part of a multi-modal approach to the treatment of Osteoarthritis.

Acupuncture appointments for pets are now available to Osteoarthritis patients with the goal of managing their pain better.

Beehive Vets are now offering acupuncture sessions for cats and dogs suffering from osteoarthritis.

Sessions will be 30 minutes long and include a history review with deep palpation (as permitted by patients) and then aiming for 10-20 minutes of time with needles placed.

Of course, part of the art of treating veterinary patients is working with acupuncture points that they can and will tolerate, but there are many options for needling “distant points” when more local ones are too sore.
